Valentine’s Day is celebrated every year on 14 February. It’s a day of showing affection to loved ones – often anonymously with cards, chocolates and flowers. But who was St Valentine, and why all the tat?

St Valentine was a priest in Rome in the third century AD living under Emperor Claudius II. Believing that married men were ineffective soldiers, the Emperor outlawed marriage.
